Leading Role for UniGe and Tetis at the UN Ocean Conference 2025

23/06/2025

From June 9 to 13, 2025, the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) took place in Nice. The central themes of the event, organized by France and Costa Rica, were ocean protection and the sustainable use of its resources, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 14. Among the standout contributors were the University of Genoa (UniGe) and its spin-off, Tetis.

In particular, during the side event “Ocean Assist” held on June 13, UniGe’s DICCA department and the Tetis Institute led discussions on regenerative blue economy—an approach that goes beyond mere sustainability by aiming for the active regeneration of marine ecosystems. Supporting thriving ocean ecosystems becomes not only a vital strategy to offset environmental impact but also a tool to empower local communities, recognizing the intrinsic connection between ocean, climate, economy, and society. In this context, UniGe presented marine restoration projects grounded in rigorous scientific evidence, with active involvement from maritime sector professionals and stakeholders.

During the same event, a new Ocean Commitment was announced, linked to the Ocean Assist program and promoted by the Water Revolution Foundation. The Commitment is supported by eCO2care, a transparent and verified international registry—the first voluntary credit registry active since 2008—managed by the Tetis Institute.

Participation in the UN Ocean Conference 2025 highlights the University of Genoa’s commitment to realizing a new vision of ocean economy—one that fosters biodiversity, protects coastal communities, and plays an active role in combating climate change.
