The New York Times lists Genoa among the destinations to visit in 2026
Genoa was listed among the 52 destinations to visit in 2026 by the New York Times and is the only Italian city on the list, along with Assisi and Breuil-Cervinia.
This recognition values the city for its maritime history, cultural heritage and urban projects that are bringing it back to the centre of international attention.
The article cites the Levante Waterfront, designed by Renzo Piano, which will transform the former Foce fairgrounds into parks and cultural spaces; the Palazzi dei Rolli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses the wonders of the noble residences of the ancient Republic of Genoa; and the Palazzo Ducale, the city's main art museum, which will host an exhibition dedicated to Anthony Van Dyck in 2026.
Mention is also made of the historic center, among the largest in Europe, and the increasingly innovative food scene thanks to the reinterpretation of traditional recipes made by young chefs.
Mayor Salis emphasizes the international attention paid to Genoa and the administration's commitment to making the city more welcoming and accessible. Furthermore, as Culture Councilor Giacomo Montanari emphasizes, 2026 will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO recognition of the Palazzi dei Rolli, an excellent opportunity to launch numerous cultural initiatives. Tourism Councilor Tiziana Beghin expresses pride in the recognition she has received and cites recent investments in the international market, particularly in the United States, promoting Genoa as a city that combines culture, nature, and innovation.
