Staglieno, FAI Place of the Heart: Genoa Celebrates One of the City’s Symbolic Landmarks
The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno is officially among the winners of the 12th edition of FAI’s “Places of the Heart” ranking eighth in Italy and first in Liguria. This is a historic achievement, as Staglieno is the only cemetery to have ever received funding from the national grant program.
The recognition is the result of a major civic mobilization: during the 2024–2025 census, as many as 8,117 votes were collected thanks to the coordinated work of the Municipality of Genoa and the association GenovaFa, but above all thanks to the affection of the Genoese people, who chose to support this symbolic place of the city.
The €21,000 contribution received will be used to carry out the project “Staglieno Museum: An Accessible and Engaging Journey Through Art and History” aimed at making visits to the site even more accessible and immersive through the use of innovative digital tools.
Staglieno is a vast open-air museum that brings together art, memory, and landscape, capable of captivating even the youngest audiences. The Staglieno Days welcomed over 8,000 visitors, one third of whom were under 35, demonstrating that this is truly a place that can speak to all generations.
This award is meant not only as a recognition, but also as a starting point to allow an increasingly wide audience to enjoy its beauty and the history it tells.
