27/01/2026

Genova has applied for “Italian Capital of the Sea 2026” with the aim of enhancing the historical and economic link between Genova and the sea, promoting sustainable growth, social innovation, and urban regeneration.

In support of the candidacy, the city has joined the EU Mission Charter “Restore our Oceans and Waters by 2030”, which commits the administration on two fronts:

  • the promotion and territorial animation of issues related to the blue world, with the involvement of sport and tourism;
  • the coordination of the Mayor Coalition, a network of mayors geared towards building a shared agenda for the Mediterranean transition

This project is part of a journey of urban regeneration and sustainable development, with tools such as the Lighthouse Strategy – Genoa City Lighthouse (until 2030) and the Genoa 2050 Action Plan.

At the European level, Genova led the Urban Agenda Partnership on Adaptation to Climate Change and today is co – coordinator for Sustainable Tourism. The city decided to put the sea at the center of its environmental and economic policies, participating in MedCities.
Completing this commitment is the Genova Process, created to transform the Ocean Bill of Rights, presented to the ONU in 2023, into a Universal Declaration by 2030.

The city has received significant international recognition: the European Investment Bank awarded it the title of EU Blue Champion for its leadership in the maritime economy and coastal regeneration, while the Village of the Genova Blue District won the BlueMissionMedSociety4Med Award for innovative environmental education and awareness projects on the Mediterranean
