Innovation and Deep Tech: Fincantieri bets on Generative Bionics' intelligent robots

17/02/2026

A new partnership in the field of deep tech has been announced between Fincantieri and Generative Bionics, the first Italian startup founded in Genoa as a spin-off of the IIT (Italian Institute of Technology).

This initiative involves a collaboration between the shipbuilding giant and the young IIT venture, aimed at implementing a humanoid robot equipped with artificial intelligence. The robot is designed to operate within shipyards, providing support to specialized workers.

The integration of robotics into critical tasks—such as welding in complex environments—not only increases safety levels and work sustainability but also represents a specific strategic choice. The project is part of Fincantieri Group’s new Industrial Plan, which seeks to consolidate operational excellence and the technological leadership of European shipbuilding.

"Advanced robotics and artificial intelligence applied to industrial processes represent a strategic lever for the evolution of shipbuilding and for the competitiveness of the European industrial system," stated Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri.

For Generative Bionics, this collaboration marks one of the first systematic industrial testing initiatives of their technology within high-complexity production ecosystems.

The agreement outlines four years of research and experimentation, with the first field tests scheduled to take place at the Sestri Levante shipyard by the end of 2026.
