Genoa is investing in the shipsbuilding industry's future: a new fitting-out quay has been completed with a €60 million investment

Genova has once again confirmed its position as a key hub for the international shipbuilding industry: the new fitting-out quay in the Sestri Ponente port industrial area has been completed, with a total investment of around 60 million euros.

The new facility, 315 metres long and equipped with a new 15,000-square-metre operational area, will enable the assembly of the next-generation ships, representing a strategic milestone in a development plan that includes the construction of a new 400-metre-long dry dock, set to become one of the most modern facilities in the Mediterranean.

The project forms part of the development programme promoted by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority and was completed in just fifteen months. The works also included the completion of the gas and electricity network infrastructure, an electrical substation fitted with a shore-to-ship system, a new stair tower and the runways for the Fincantieri crane. Furthermore, as part of the project, stabilisation works were carried along the Rio Cantarena.

The future dry dock will be accompanied by dredging works, increasing the water depth from 9 to 11 metres, allowing access to new-generation ships. Most of the excavated material will be reused in accordance with the principles of the circular economy: some will be reused within the shipyard, whilst the remainder will be used to fill the caissons of the New Breakwater, creating a strong synergy between the two projects and helping to minimise the environmental impact and reduce the use of new raw materials.
