“Genova’s new breakwater: a strategic investment in infrastructure for Italy’s future
The new Genova Breakwater is one of the largest infrastructure projects currently under construction in Europe and a strategic investment that will strengthen Italy’s position in the global logistics and maritime transportation network. During the site visit, the project was described as a benchmark for the future development of Italian ports, with officials emphasizing that by 2028 the Port of Genova will be transformed into a world-class maritime gateway capable of meeting the demands of modern global shipping.
With a total investment of 1.5 billion euros, the new breakwater will allow the entry and handling of the latest generation of container ships, up to 450 metres long, which are currently unable to access the port of Genova fully. Once completed, the project will significantly increase the port’s operational capacity, safety, and efficiency, reinforcing Genova’s position as the leading logistics hub in the Mediterranean and one of Europe’s premier ports.
According to estimates presented during the visit, the project is expected to increase cargo traffic by approximately 25%, generating an estimated 4.2 billion euros in economic benefits for the region. Beyond its local impact, the new breakwater will strengthen Italy’s national logistics network by improving connections between the Port of Genova, Northern Italy, and the major European freight corridors. These improvements are expected to generate employment, attract new investment, and foster industrial development.
During the institutional presentations, speakers highlighted the project as a model for next-generation European infrastructure, demonstrating how innovation, environmental sustainability, and responsible public investment can successfully coexist. They also emphasized that Genova should be viewed not only as a model for Italian ports but as a benchmark for the broader European port system. By expanding the port’s capacity and improving its competitiveness, the new breakwater will enhance Italy’s strategic role in international trade and global supply chains.
The visit also included the Begato district, where officials showcased an ambitious urban renewal program centered on new public housing developments. The initiative was presented as an example of successful urban regeneration, integrating infrastructure investment, environmental sustainability, and improved quality of life. It reflects a broader vision for sustainable growth that combines major public works with innovation and community development.
Through the construction of the new breakwater and its ongoing urban regeneration initiatives, Genova reaffirms its role as a hub for innovation and development: a city that invests in the future, creating value for the local area, for businesses and for the whole country.”
