Artificial Intelligence and Public Services in Genova
The Municipality of Genova has launched a pilot programme to introduce artificial intelligence into the management of public services and administrative processes, with the aim of making interactions between the administration, citizens, and businesses simpler, faster, and more efficient. The initiative stems from a memorandum of understanding with Fusion AI Labs S.r.l., a company specialising in applied AI research, to develop technological solutions capable of improving municipal operations and the quality of services provided across the city.
The pilot programme aims to use artificial intelligence not only to automate certain tasks, but above all as a tool to support the management and planning of public services. By analysing large volumes of data, AI can help the administration identify critical issues, anticipate emerging needs, simplify procedures, and make decision-making processes more efficient. For citizens, professionals, and businesses, this could mean faster response times, fewer bureaucratic steps, easier access to information, and services that are better tailored to the city’s needs.
The project will focus on four main areas: revenue management, urban mobility, internal administrative processes, and communication with citizens. Automating repetitive tasks could also allow municipal departments to devote more resources to higher-value activities, improving the administration’s ability to plan and manage public services in a timely and effective manner.
AI will also play an important role in the management of the city, its territory, and urban mobility. Monitoring through satellite imagery could feed predictive analytics models focused on urban resilience and sustainability, helping the administration identify critical situations and plan interventions more effectively. The analysis of traffic flows and transport data could contribute to more efficient mobility management, with tangible benefits for the daily journeys of citizens, workers, and businesses.
The transformation will also affect the way people and businesses interact directly with the Municipality. The use of artificial intelligence in communication channels and administrative services aims to reduce waiting times and bureaucratic complexity, facilitate access to information, and make interactions with municipal offices faster and more straightforward. The benefits could therefore extend to both citizens and businesses, retailers, and professionals who rely on municipal services in their day-to-day activities.
At the same time, the project includes a review of internal processes and training for municipal staff, enabling the new tools to be progressively integrated into the work of municipal departments. AI will be introduced gradually through a pilot and evaluation phase, while ensuring compliance with the principles of security, transparency, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The ultimate goal is to build a more digital, connected, and data-driven Public Administration, capable of using artificial intelligence not only to increase internal efficiency, but above all to turn these improvements into simpler, faster, and more accessible public services, with a tangible impact on citizens’ daily lives and on business activities.
