University of Genoa: Innovation and International Research with the Ulysseus Project

The University of Genova is looking to the future through its participation in Ulysseus, a European project that brings together universities, researchers and young people from different countries. Its goal is to promote the exchange of knowledge and create new opportunities in the fields of research, education and innovation.

The initiative involves universities from Spain, France, Slovakia, Austria, Finland, Germany and Montenegro, in addition to Genova. Its activities include programmes focusing on robotics, bioengineering, health and active ageing, with particular attention also given to artificial intelligence and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Ulysseus ecosystem comprises the eight institutions of the Alliance, together with 152 associated partners, as well as the so-called “Ulysseus Campus”, which consists of three joint structures: the Central Management Office (CMO), the Digital Platform and the Innovation Hub. Overall, the network involves approximately 225,475 students, 139 research centres, 143 faculties and 1,688 research groups, supported by a staff of around 25,000 people. Together, they have developed more than 700 patents and 400 partnerships with companies in relevant sectors.

Medical research also plays a significant role. Among the outstanding achievements of Genova based research is the international recognition received by Carlo Liberale, Associate Professor at the University of Genova and researcher at the IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino. He was awarded the Karl Link Early Career Investigator Award in Thrombosis by the American Heart Association. The award recognises a study carried out in collaboration with the University of Zurich and the Technical University of Munich investigating the links between inflammation, ageing, thrombosis and cardiovascular disease. The research identified promising new therapeutic targets for the prevention of these conditions.

Participation in Ulysseus confirms Genova role as a European hub for innovation, research and higher education, strengthening the region’s ability to attract talent, foster international collaboration and encourage investment in high-tech sectors.
