Genova celebrates Colombo and honours sport: the international recognition for Giovanni Malagò
Since 1950, every 12th of October, Genova renews its tribute to Cristoforo Colombo, illustrious citizen and symbol of exploration, celebrating the discovery of America and the value of travel as an opportunity for growth and discovery. In this context, the city takes the opportunity to honour those who left Genoa and returned to promote it as a city in which to live, as well as those who have made the city's name famous throughout the world, through the Colombian Ceremony held in the Hall of the Great Council of the Ducal Palace. The Colombian Awards presented by the Mayor of Genova, Silvia Salis, are the Colombian Medal to Professor Antonio Musarra, the “Christopher Columbus” International Communications Award to the Port Authority - Coast Guard and the International Sports Award to Giovanni Malagò.
Genova, European Capital of Sport 2024, has always believed deeply in the values of sport, not only as a means of physical well-being, but also as a vehicle for spiritual, educational and social growth. For this reason, the International Sports Award is intended for those who have been able to promote sport in all its dimensions: competitive, educational and cultural.
Malagò, former President of CONI for twelve years and currently a member of the IOC, is a leading figure in Italian and international sport, with a new course set for the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Milan-Cortina.
A day of celebrations that combines history, memory and civic pride, confirming the city's international vocation and the central role of sport in building a dynamic, inclusive and attractive city.
