From Goods to Data: Genoa’s Transformation into a Tech Hub
Ge-DIX (Genoa Data Internet Exchange) announces the entry of Nexim Global into the Genoese consortium. Nexim Global is an Italian-American telecommunications operator and a leading player for businesses and the digital sector. The company specializes in data transmission, primarily managing video/broadcast traffic based on a “one-to-many” model—delivering content from a single source to a vast audience through a network spanning thousands of kilometers of fiber optics.
For an Internet Exchange Point like Ge-DIX—founded in 2022 as a non-profit public-private initiative—welcoming a company like Nexim Global solidifies the goal of transforming Genoa into a global technological hub.
The arrival of the tenth consortium member marks a significant milestone for the city, confirming its growing role in the telecommunications sector. This is further highlighted by the recent agreement between Sparkle and Valencia Digital Port Connect for the landing of Barracuda in Genoa—a subsea cable system that positions the city as the ideal terminal for traffic originating from other continents. Integration into the Genoese infrastructure will provide existing users with higher service quality and reduced latency, while enriching the network with new expertise. Furthermore, this move will significantly impact local network resilience, ensuring business continuity in the event of outages.
With the arrival of these subsea systems and the expansion of Ge-DIX, Genoa continues its transformation: evolving from a historic maritime trade port into a “digital port” for data.
