Genoa focuses on energy communities: proposal to join CERMAGe
The Genoa City Council has proposed that the municipality join the local renewable energy community "CERMAGe – C.E.R. metropolitana Area GE territoriale". Promoted by the Metropolitan City of Genoa, this initiative aims to encourage the production, consumption, and sharing of clean energy at a local level.
This initiative comes at a time when energy issues are increasingly central. Between the volatility of global markets, the fossil fuel crisis, and rising utility bills, achieving greater energy independence has become a strategic priority.
CERMAGe is a non-profit association that brings together public administrations, businesses, the Third Sector (non-profits), and citizens to generate and share renewable energy within the area. Members can participate as producers, consumers, or "prosumers," contributing to the system and receiving economic benefits in proportion to their input.
The Municipality of Genoa is specifically set to take on the role of a prosumer: Palazzo Tursi will be able to produce and consume energy, sharing it across the local grid. By doing so, the municipality is taking an active role not only in regulation but also in energy production and management, maximizing the value of existing and future public assets.
The Metropolitan City will provide complete technical support for local setups, ranging from legal and administrative assistance to accessing funding and GSE (Energy Services Manager) incentives. Planned activities include the development of new energy plants, energy efficiency upgrades, and the promotion of electric mobility.
From a social standpoint, the energy community also represents a concrete tool to combat energy poverty. It allows even those who do not have their own energy systems to access the benefits of renewable energy simply by joining as consumers.
Participating in CERMAGe is therefore part of a broader vision: energy communities are increasingly recognized as drivers of social and local innovation, capable of combining sustainability, inclusion, and efficiency.
Through this journey, Genoa aims to play a leading role in building a shared and resilient metropolitan energy network.
