Genoa experienced a day of sport with the 2025 edition of the Giro dell’Appennino, which brought men’s cycling to the city—along with a new addition: the first-ever women’s Giro dell’Appennino.

The female athletes kicked off the event in the morning on a route just over 90 kilometers long, from Novi Ligure to the heart of Genoa.

The finish line on Via XX Settembre was crossed shortly after 1:00 PM, in front of a large crowd. It was a significant debut that gave a voice to women’s cycling in a context that, until now, had been exclusively male. The Liguria Region and local institutions supported the initiative, aiming to make this participation a permanent feature in the years to come.

In the afternoon, the men’s race took place, marking its 86th edition. The center of Genoa welcomed the finish at 5:15 PM, after an intense day in which the peloton crossed the Ligurian Apennines, facing great effort and individual moments of brilliance. The winner was greeted with applause and waving flags, concluding one of the historic races on the Ligurian calendar.

Officials present emphasized how events like this help shine a new light on the inland areas, rich in history and landscapes.

“We’re showing not only the people of Genoa but all of Italy our hills and our identity,” said Paolo Corsiglia from the Chamber of Commerce. The Giro is not just a competition, but also an opportunity to rediscover what Liguria has to offer.

The public responded enthusiastically, the athletes delivered an excellent performance, and the first edition of the women’s Giro opened a new path. It was a day where sport and territory came together in the spirit of continuity.
