Liguria Awarded for Sustainable Tourism: Wins National Pricat the 2025 Tourism Oscars
Liguria has received national recognition at the 2025 Tourism Oscars, winning the Destination Sustainability Index Award for the first time, surpassing Tuscany and Friuli Venezia Giulia. The award was presented on October 8 during the tenth edition of Italia Destinazione Digitale, the Italian “Tourism Oscars” created by The Data Appeal Company, held at the TTG Travel Experience fair in Rimini. The award was accepted by Luca Lombardi, Regional Councillor for Tourism.
The award is based on an advanced analysis of 29.5 million digital contents related to 772,000 tourist points of interest, collected between September 2024 and August 2025. To ensure the most accurate evaluation of Italian destinations, generative language models (LLMs) were used.
Liguria stood out as a model of sustainable tourism, earning first place thanks to its commitment to soft mobility, environmental protection, and inclusivity. Particularly appreciated were the cycling tourism initiatives, including a wide network of loops connecting the coast and inland areas, and numerous e-bike charging stations, well-equipped and clearly and uniformly marked.
In 2025, Liguria also published an updated version of the Accessible Sea Guide and launched the brand-new Accessible Hotels Guide. The former lists 278 accessible beaches out of 958 beach establishments, marking a 26% increase compared to 2024. The latter focuses on accommodation facilities and includes 67 accessible hotels and residences out of 85 participants in the project.
All these efforts are supported by off-season tourism policies and undertourism strategies aimed at promoting lesser-known villages and areas.
This recognition aligns perfectly with the Genova 2050 strategic vision, which aims to transform the city into a “Lighthouse City”—a replicable model of innovation, resilience, and sustainability. The plan is structured around three pillars: Grey, Green, and Soft Assets, and positions tourism as a key driver of development, in synergy with culture, sports, and events.
The award ceremony also featured the exclusive presentation of the new report “All the Data of Italy 2025”, offering a comprehensive overview of the state of Italian tourism and emerging trends, as perceived and shared by online users between September 2024 and August 2025.
