100% renewable marine biofuel debuts in the port of Genoa

26/11/2025

The Port of Genoa is taking a new step towards the energy transition: diesel HVO for maritime transport, a biofuel made entirely from renewable raw materials, is now available. Thanks to Enilive – the Eni Group company dedicated to sustainable mobility products and services – ships will be able to receive fuel directly via a dinghy, with delivery from the depot to the docking point.

The initiative is part of a broader plan that also involves the Ravenna and, by the end of the year, Venice airports, where Enilive will make the same supply available.

HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) is produced in the Enilive biorefineries in Venice and Gela, mainly using waste raw materials such as used food oils, animal fats, and residues from the agri-food industry. This biofuel can be used pure in already certified marine engines, allowing a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of between 60% and 90% compared to traditional fossil fuels, according to the parameters set by the European Renewable Energy Directive.

In addition to representing an immediate solution for the decarbonisation of the maritime sector, HVO contributes to the achievement of the objectives set out in the FuelEU Maritime Regulation and to the reduction of costs related to the Emission Trading System.

With a biorefining capacity of 1.65 million tonnes per year, Enilive is today among the leading European producers of HVO. The biorefineries in Venice and Gela are joined by one in Louisiana (USA, in a 50% joint venture), while three new plants are under construction in Malaysia, South Korea and Livorno. By 2030, the company aims to exceed 5 million tons of annual production capacity.

The arrival of marine biofuel in the port of Genoa thus consolidates the role of the Ligurian port as a strategic hub for innovation and sustainability in the Mediterranean.
