Nearly Zero Energy Building: 60 new energy-efficient homes are now ready, thanks to an investment of over 35 million euros

Genova has taken a further step forward in urban regeneration with the completing of the development on the site of the former Begato residential complex known as the “Dam”, one of the most significant public housing regeneration projects carried out in recent years. Thanks to a total investment of over 35 million euros, an area long associated with social issues and urban decay has been transformed into a modern neighbourhood characterised by high standards of environmental sustainability and new public services.

After the demolition of the housing complex, which was completed in 2021, three new NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) apartment buildings have been constructed, characterised by high standards of energy efficiency and a high quality of living. The new buildings will house a total of 60 flats for public and social housing, whilst part of the vacated site will be used for a new Carabinieri barracks, ensuring a new local presence and contributing to the neighbourhood’s safety and appeal.
The project has been completed in five years and it represents a concrete example of an efficient use of public fundings. In addition to the total investment, 15 million euros have been allocated from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), as well as an additional 2 million euros earmarked for the redevelopment of outdoor spaces, which will include green spaces, sports facilities and areas for social activities.

New residents are expected to move in from autumn onwards, whilst preparations for the call for bids for the allocation of social housing are under way. The project follows on from the relocation of the 374 households previously living at the Begato "Dam".
This initiative forms part of Genova’s wider strategy to revitalise underused urban areas, improve the energy efficiency of the building stock and promote increasingly sustainable and accessible models of living. This project reaffirms the city’s commitment to combining social inclusion, urban quality and investments in local development.
