"Genova Strengthens Viaduct Monitoring: Sensors and Artificial Intelligence for Predictive Maintenance

Genova is taking another step towards becoming a smart city by introducing an advanced system for the continuous monitoring of infrastructure, based on sensors, data analysis and artificial intelligence. The project involves the installation of a permanent sensor network on three of the city's viaducts: the Castagna Viaduct on Corso Europa, the bridge on Via De Sanctis in Prà, and the viaduct on Via Vallecrosia in Voltri. These are the first structures in Genova to be equipped with permanent devices designed to continuously monitor their structural conditions.

The technology was developed by Displaid, a deep-tech startup founded in 2023 as a spin-off from Politecnico di Milano, specialising in the predictive monitoring of bridges and viaducts.

The installation, funded through municipal resources, was completed within a few days without affecting road traffic. The system uses wireless sensors installed directly on the structures to analyse deck vibrations, measure the inclination of piers and beams, and detect changes in structural stiffness. These indicators can signal the early stages of deterioration.

The data collected are transmitted in real time to a digital platform, enabling continuous analysis of the condition of the structures. Thanks to artificial intelligence, when anomalies are detected, technicians can intervene promptly with in-depth analyses and targeted assessments, thereby improving the effectiveness of infrastructure management.

The aim is to develop a predictive maintenance model combining traditional periodic inspections with constant monitoring of the actual condition of the infrastructure, in order to plan interventions more efficiently, optimise resources and time, and identify critical issues at an early stage.

This initiative is particularly relevant given the scale of Genova infrastructure network. A survey conducted by the municipal technical departments identified 679 bridges and elevated structures, comprising a total of 2,948 spans. Inspections have so far enabled the classification of 629 structures, of which 38.96% fall into the ‘high’ and ‘medium-high’ risk categories.

The monitoring of these first three viaducts therefore represents an initial step towards an increasingly technology-driven and preventive approach to the management of Genova infrastructure.

The adoption of advanced infrastructure monitoring technologies further demonstrates Genova commitment to investing in innovative solutions that support urban safety. At the same time, it creates opportunities for collaboration with high-tech companies and strengthens the city's role as a testing ground for innovation applied to infrastructure and urban asset management.”
