OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES AND SUSTAINABILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR OUTDOOR AND INDOOR EVENTS
A new model for integrating sustainability into events and generating lasting value for the local community.
The Guidelines for Sustainable Event Management, approved by the Genoa City Council, serve as the new framework for the planning, organization, and execution of cultural, sporting, tourism, institutional, and commercial events within the city. The document updates previous guidelines and incorporates the latest international standards on sustainable event management, specifically the UNI ISO 20121:2024 standard
They promote an integrated approach to sustainability, based on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, with the goal of reducing environmental impacts, fostering inclusion and accessibility, supporting the local economy, and enhancing the transparency of organizational processes. Particular attention is given to the efficient management of resources, waste prevention and reduction, sustainable mobility, the responsible selection of suppliers and partners, event accessibility, and the measurement of generated impacts.
They also encourage the adoption of practices geared toward the circular economy and the continuous improvement of sustainability performance.
Through this document, the City of Genoa aims to consolidate an event management model that combines appeal, innovation, and responsibility, contributing to the city’s ecological transition and the creation of a positive legacy for the community and the local area.
Carbon Footprint Study of the Institution
Climate change produces complex and difficult-to-measure effects, impacting health, the environment and tourism. The City Administration has decided to prepare its first Sustainability Report from an ESG perspective, opening a dialogue with public, business and institutional stakeholders.
The Carbon Footprint study of the Municipality of Genoa is currently underway, funded by Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo and carried out in collaboration with the University of Genoa (UniGe) and the Polytechnic University of Turin (PoliTo). The initiative aims to analyse and quantify greenhouse gas emissions to define decarbonisation and sustainable urban development strategies.
Sustainability Report
The Sustainability Report is being prepared by the Municipality of Genoa to transparently communicate its environmental, social and governance impact. It goes beyond financial data, illustrating the institution’s social and environmental responsibility.
This project is carried out in partnership with TEHA Group – The European House Ambrosetti, ensuring reliable reporting and a long-term strategic vision.
Projects Funded by National Programmes (M.A.S.E.)
The strategic framework has been supported by the Action Plan 2050, which identified 12 key initiatives, including climate adaptation actions forming part of the One Stop Shop Academy, funded by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE).
The Climate Adaptation Academy is an innovative tool based on mutual learning, aimed at sharing and certifying skills related to climate change and sustainable urban adaptation.
It is a hub of excellence — both physical and digital — for sharing experiences, exchanging knowledge and designing sustainable future scenarios through skill-sharing processes.
Related initiatives include events and workshops at Parco del Ponte, digital simulation of the park and the Forts Route, public engagement sessions and thematic podcasts.
The park was modelled using real details of plants, spaces and sustainable structures. Atmospheric animations make the experience immersive and dynamic, while multilingual avatars explain the history, environment and sustainability of the area.
Genoa Lighthouse Community Event
An event at Parco della Memoria under the San Giorgio Bridge brought together workshops, talks, art and music, narrating the city through a sustainable perspective.
Parco del Ponte — Lot 1
The Parco della Memoria covers a total of 8,674 m², while Lot 1 includes 2,484 m². The project represents an urban forest with green areas, wooden walkways, children’s play areas and hedge corridors along the railway. As part of the territory’s regenerative narrative, it combines memory and sustainability, becoming a symbol of urban rebirth.
